Michelle Obama

person of the yearIt is often said that behind every great man there is a great woman. Such holds true in the case of President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, the latter of whom I have chosen as my Person of the Year.

Beautiful, confident, and intelligent, Mrs. Obama has a lot to be proud of. “According to reports, Michelle has mastered being a mother, career woman and the wife of a politician” (Squidoo). And on January 20, 2009, Michelle Obama became a part of this nation’s history as she stood faithfully by her husband’s side as he was sworn into office as the 44th president of the United States of America. From fashion icon to service advocate and everything in between, Michelle has even been hailed as “the real power behind the presidency" (Telegraph). Since President Obama’s inauguration, Michelle has maintained her reputation and has provided great support for our commander in chief.

Her story is indeed a remarkable one that will continue to serve as an inspiration for generations to come. Having grown up in a working-class family, Michelle managed to graduate from both Princeton and Harvard to eventually land herself a successful career in law (Organizing for America).

Overall, Michelle Obama serves as a role model for women of all ages, backgrounds, races, and political affiliations. But this year, polls revealed strong support for Michelle, as 68 percent of registered voters had a favorable opinion of her—including a whopping 53 percent of Republicans (Marist Poll). There also are a number of blogs such as “Trail Blazer,” which follow and highlight Michelle’s life and work. Not to mention, Barbara Walters placed the First Lady at the top of her list of the 10 Most Fascinating People of 2009 (Examiner).

Michelle’s ongoing perseverance, support, and drive are great demonstrations of how her life is not measured by just one accomplishment, but rather through her continued dedication and success. And heck, who can forget her trademark arms that have made women across the world cringe with envy this year?

In the end, Michelle said it best herself when she said, “I believe that each of us--no matter what our age or background or walk of life--each of us has something to contribute to the life of this nation” (Huffington Post). I am impressed by what Michelle has contributed thus far and can’t wait to see what she does next.

What do you think? Do you have a favorable opinion of Michelle Obama? What about those who criticize her for being nothing more than a typical “trophy wife?"
