For The Love Of Baking

The Holiday season is upon us. For me this means many things, including friends, family, celebrations, present shopping and merriment. However, I do spend a great deal of time in the kitchen baking. During this time of year I primarily make christmas cookies. And lots of them. We send some to friends and relatives and keep the rest for ourselves. Over the course of the next month I will spend three or four whole days in the kitchen baking and decorating cookies. Over the years it has become my job and I have perfected the recipe my mom had been using for years. Cookie baking has become my project and for about the last decade I have been in charge of the task. The others help, but it is really my project. I basically live in the kitchen. I love baking so I do not mind this in the slightest.
Baking is my own personal escape from the craziness of the season. It calms me and relieves my stress. Even more than that, I’m pretty good at it and my baked goods are delicious. I’m not trying to toot my own horn here, but baking is just something I happen to be talented at. I am a baker. I make tasty treats.
Cookie baking in my house at Christmas is always something of a major production. While I do most of the actual baking, my entire family, as well as a few friends and the occasional significant other join in as well. The table is covered in icing and cookies and sprinkles. Christmas music competes with voices as we all gather around the table and decorate endless amounts of cookies. It has become one of my favorite traditions. In the end we have rows and rows of cookies... and it looks somewhat like a bakery counter. The only difference is we have a varied level of talent... so some look nice while others look like blobs of icing. All taste fantastic regardless.
It is beacuse of this particular tradition that I think I will always associate baking with smiles, laughter and overall merriment. It makes me and everyone else around me happy. Cookies spread joy and give everyone a nice sugar jolt as well as a tasty treat to enjoy. This itself, the joy of others, is enough for me to be over the moon with giddiness.
I am a baker. I love to bake. I love to share my treats with others and watch them enjoy the fruits of my labor. I bake for myself and I bake for others. Baking spreads smiles and joy and I love to be a part of that. As much as poeple try not to gain too much holiday weight these days, I believe there is absolutely nothing wrong with the occaional holiday cookie. ‘Tis the season to be jolly. So eat a cookie, and be jolly!
