The "Unlikely" Homeowner

4.2

stereotypesI’ll never forget the first time I witnessed a stereotype in action. I was about 10 years old, playing in the backyard of our old house. It was a sunny fall day and I was blissfully enjoying my last few weeks of freedom before school started up again.

My father, who takes pride in making sure our house always looks beautiful inside and out, was cutting the grass. I remember seeing a tall white man approaching our house with something in his hand. He seemed nice enough—clean cut with a nice shirt and slacks on. My dad stopped mowing and walked toward the man. They exchanged a few words and then the man walked away, seemingly confused, while my dad stormed in the house. Not knowing what was wrong, I followed my father inside to listen in as he told my mother what had happened.

Living the Dream

martin luther king jrForty-seven short years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., stood before more than 200,000 civil rights activists and delivered what has come to be known as “one of the greatest and most notable speeches in human history” (Wikipedia).

I can only wonder what it would have been like to be a part of the audience that day; to look up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and see Dr. King, to feel the power radiating from his words and to be inspired by the passion and cadence in his voice.

person of the yearIt is often said that behind every great man there is a great woman. Such holds true in the case of President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, the latter of whom I have chosen as my Person of the Year.

Regifting: The Resourceful Way to Brighten the Holidays

holiday seasonAccording to Dictionary.com, to regift is, “to give an unwanted gift to someone else; to give as a gift something one previously received as a gift.”

For some people the thought of regifting is seen as something negative. But why, I ask? Sure, no one wants to receive a half- eaten fruitcake or previously worn socks. But there are many times when regifting an item can be perfectly acceptable.

The Female Proposal

I’d like to think I’m a pretty open-minded person. I’m all for women’s equality, and I believe women have a right to make their own decisions in life. If a woman wants to be a CEO, go get it girl! If a woman wants to stay home to be a mother and wife, more power to her. If a woman wants to do something in between, or something completely different, even better! (You get the picture.) But, there is one thing I’m not quite sure how I feel about women doing—proposing marriage.
