Afghanistan: More Troops Not the Answer

operation enduring freedom afghanistanAt some point, you have to wonder, when is enough, enough? Eight years ago the United States invaded Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. With the recent request for as many as 40,000 additional troops, President Obama will soon make what some are calling the most difficult decision of his presidency.

Obama inherited this war, and history now rests in his hands. Will he continue to try to win over what has historically been called “unconquerable”? Or, will he listen to the growing concern over the need to Rethink Afghanistan?

When I recently read this article featuring the story of a local Afghan, things were really put into perspective for me. In it, the man states (in reference to the hardships and unemployment faced by the locals), “If you want to stop the fighting, don’t send us more troops; build us more factories.”

I agree we need to reevaluate our purpose for being in Afghanistan. After eight years of combat have proved to not be enough, we need to start helping to reestablish the country beyond the battlefield. As stated on the Rethink Afghanistan Web site, “The U.S. can play a more constructive role in Afghanistan by engaging civil society than by waging war.” I fully support this statement and I hope President Obama will listen to those calling for a new strategy.

What do you think? Should we pursue more non-military options in Afghanistan? Or, do you think more troops would help us ultimately cross the finish line and achieve success?
