A Dog Day Afternoon

4

They always say that a dog is a man's best friend while diamonds are a girl's best friend. Personally, I never really cared for diamonds, they always seemed too expensive and I thought I'd lose them—but I love my dog, Meryl, and she truly is one of my best friends. The sad thing is, as I feel like I've been growing up too fast, I failed to see that Meryl is growing 4 times the rate I am. While my family has only had her for 13 years, in reality, she's almost 70 years old! In dog years, of course.

Much Ado with A Bout of the Flu

It's that time of the year. The dreaded months where Kleenex sales skyrocket, Robitussin becomes the hottest cocktail around, and instead of Halloween candy, we're all taking cough drops. That's right, it's Flu season. I've always been pretty susceptible to colds and flus, but I felt since I was a battered victim of Allergy season, I thought I'd catch a break from the flu; unfortunately, all I ended up catching was nasty cold.

Like most girls, I went through a pretty heavy fairy tale obsession while growing up. I read of evil stepmothers, damsels in distress, talking animals and, of course, prince charming. The difference was, I wouldn't lose myself in the world of Disney prince charming and Grimm's princesses in disguise. No, I fell in love with the fairy tales and folklore of different countries. Instead of Cinderella, I read the Italian story of Cenerentola. Instead of pumpkins and fairy godmothers, there were Faeries and date trees.

Fear Factor

I've always had very conflicting emotions about horror films. When I was younger, my sister and I watched all sorts of horror films ranging from the terrifying “Child's Play,” which still scares me to this day, all the way to the fantastically campy “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes,” which I still make fun of to this day. My sister was fanatical about horror films, she loved them, and loved to watch them in the dead of night with all the lights off.

Dazed and Confused

I often find myself looking around and lamenting about the state of the world today and wondering why no one notices the beauty and sadness in everyday life. I was very dramatic in my teenage years, so much of these thoughts must have carried over. What bothers me the most is that I wander the city and see every person almost desensitize themselves to their surroundings and focus only on their destinations. This leads me to all sorts of questions: who is this person? Where are they rushing off to?
