Is Your Own Life Too Boring?

boring lifeWe definitely have a problem in our country with “oversharing”. Why do we care so much?! Who is the biggest loser? Who cheated on whom? Who who who!

I think sometimes this stems from us being so fed up with our lives, that we need an escape. If you go to the same job every day, and cook the same dinner every night, then it's very exciting to read about whom Britney Spears is dating this week, or what J Lo is wearing this year to the Oscars. Upset about something that happened to you? At least you aren’t messed up like Lindsey Lohan, or disgraced like Carrie Prejean. Whether an escape from boredom, or an escape from reality – we crave it, and the more we salivate over it, the more random information we get.

Are we surprised at the fact that websites that let us share have exploded? Twitter, Facebook, and Yelp are all centered on useless bits of information that we can now share with each other easily. This feeds in to the same reason we eat up celebrity gossip: boredom and escapism.

The problem is, the more we feed into all this drama, the more money the paparazzi see. This makes them even more aggressive and invasive, which angers the celebrities, which causes more scenes. It’s a spiral, and it’s definitely gotten worse. We need to focus more on enriching our own lives to make them interesting in a positive way, instead of sticking our noses in someone else’s business.

You might ask, who does it really hurt? Or because they are rich, you might say they deserve it! But when a divorced mother, who is living with her mother, gets IVF and delivers 8 babies, then signs for a TV show, you have to ask: are we giving her permission to expose her kids to that? We know that the other famous plus eight family broke down because of the cameras, and we are STILL giving them our attention and money. I feel sorry for the Gosselins – exposing their lives to the cameras ended up being the ruin of them. But at the same time, they wanted to put their kids on TV to profit off them… Maybe I don’t feel sorry for the parents at all.
