Eyes Wide Shut

rapeOn October 24th, just a few weeks ago, we were all shocked by reports of a gang rape and beating in Richmond, California. A high school dance ended in this horrific event for one 16-year-old girl. She was beaten and raped for hours in public, while passersby made no motion to stop the attacks, which were perpetrated by up to 10 suspects. I really hope learning these details angers others as much as it angered me. There’s no other emotion for it. I’m irate and disgusted. Still. After sitting on this story for two weeks.

This 16-year-old-girl left her school dance and spotted some friends having a drink outside. She had apparently ingested quite a bit of alcohol and was half-conscious when she was found by police hours later, underneath a bench outside of her school. I know the moral depravity of some people, many times, becomes the blight of others, but how do the circumstances line up in such a way that no one calls for help? No one who actually saw this! It was reported by someone who heard word of mouth about it.

It is a result demonstrated in many studies that when people see things, they are much more affected by them. Case in point, the anti-smoking commercials where we are forced to watch someone with a tube sticking out of their throat, or someone who has lost three fingers. What is so different about a sexual assault incident that makes people have the opposite reaction? This raises some serious questions about the way our culture views rape (like the elephant in the room we should avoid speaking about. If we ignore it maybe it'll just go away. Yeah right!)

Are people so desensitized that even seeing a brutal sexual attack does not faze the public? I get suspicious of couples exchanging a few harsh words in a supermarket! Who are these people who saw a girl get raped “with a foreign object” and did nothing about it? Our fellow peers in school, at work, and our neighbors are the people on whom we rely on a daily basis to, if not rush to our rescue, but make an attempt to get us help. I honestly feel like I’ve stepped into a different dimension when I think about people strolling by this gruesome scene unaffected by what they’ve seen.

I know that everyone’s thinking about the rapists as well, and in no way am I excusing their actions by focusing on the misgivings of the passersby. I’m just shocked that even people, who may not succumb to actually committing a despicable crime like that, would let other people do so. How can someone sleep at night, knowing that they witnessed a tragedy that could have possibly been prevented? It’s scary. To what extent do the moral compasses of our neighbors and colleagues allow them to forgive themselves?

This has to raise concerns about community action and safety. The police most likely won’t be there unless they are called. This is now the problem of the neighborhood, of the parents whose children attend this school. Wouldn’t they want someone to call for help for their sons and daughters?

no means no..

first off being drunk is not a negation of your right to say no. i drink, lots of women do, it doesnt make us bad women who deserve to be violated. no always means no regardless of what you drank or took.

beyond that though, where were the teachers and chaperones at this dance? when i was in highschool we sure drank but not in the parking lot, someone would have been there from the school to catch us. i dont understand how this could happen right in the parking lot. how can ten boys gang rape a girl and have noone from the school intervene? they shouldnt have even been able to get away with drinking that close to the dance let alone a major gang rape! so where were the people who were supposed to be watching these kids? i hope the school officials are held responsible for this lack of basic supervision as well as the monsters who did this to that poor girl..

abomination

It is sad and despicable and basically un-human when we cannot rely on our neigbors to save us from a crime. The reason that the streets are supposed to be safer in broad daylight and amongst a crowd of people is that the assumption is, is that people will come to our aid if we are being wronged...not in this case. If all people behaved like this then society would fall apart. The people who witnessed this crime and didn't do anything to stop it are just as culpable as the rapists. It is our responsibility as human beings to stop these situations. The police cannot be everywhere, and it is up to each individual person to do their part in enforcing and supporting a safe atmosphere and society for each other. This story is abomination of society or rather these individuals' social responsibilities. I wish everyone who saw this and didn't do anything to stop it gets tried for a crime.

despicable

One of the interesting things I find with this story, is the despicable comments that come along with it. Instead of focusing on the fact that this poor girl was brutally raped, people focus on the fact that she was drinking. HELLO! How many of us drank with friends at that age?? I'm not saying that she made the best decision drinking with a mixed group (meaning peers and strangers) outside of her hs, but in no way does alcohol = i deserve to get raped. I also think there is a problem with the school if they aren't policing the grounds around their hs. I mean, this was in the PARKING LOT. There were too many people in the area and the fact that everyone turned the other way is ridiculous. Another kitty genovese story (remember when Kitty genovese from Queens was killed, everyone in the complex heard her screams, but no one did anything) so sad.

kitty

actually ive read that the kitty genovese murder probably didnt have as many witnesses as the police and media have lead us to believe, and its actually likely that someone did call the cops early during her attack but because what was reported was was a lovers quarrel which seemed to be over now, the police didnt respond as fast as they would have if it had been reported as a homicide in progress. also in those days there was no 911, you had to dial the operator and wait to be connected, so that would have taken longer too. you can read about it in superfreakenomics, where they discuss what really happened in more detail.
