Women's History Month: Part 3
As Women’s History Month winds down to its final days, the celebration of women and their achievements doesn’t have to end.
The female voice is all around us. Strong, independent, persevering and triumphant. As a woman, I feel like our impact in society has many faces, holds many truths and is capable of many great things. I am empowered by my right to choose my role in this world. I can be a college grad, I can be CEO, I can be a soldier, I can be a congresswoman and I can choose to simply be a mother and housewife. Each of these roles takes tremendous character to fulfill. Some of us can become all, some of us will struggle to find our balance between many and neither one is more important than the other. It’s simply a matter of personal happiness and it’s our choice to follow the opportunities we believe will make us whole.
Opening up society’s eyes to the potential of a woman’s character in a “man’s world” was merely the beginning stages for women in history. Taking advantage of the choices laid before us is the fuel that will continue to push us forward.
A woman’s achievements are not defined only by those whose names and faces make it into the pages of history, but by the everyday woman as well. She embodies the legacy our “foremothers” began and she can be celebrated all year round. I am no better than anyone else to say who the influential woman should be in your lives. But I can share who the powerful women are in mine and hope that you’ll be able to find as many woman or more to appreciate in yours.
Career Women
They are independent and ambitious, determined and strong willed. I respect them for their drive to provide financially for themselves, for their families and for their future. They are shop owners, policewomen, office managers, doctors, teachers, architects. They are truly many things, but above all they are going after the life that makes them happy.
Artists
They are whimsical or even shy, eccentric, empathetic and connected to a form of self expression they believe in. They can be dark, they can be happy, they can be romantic or they can be sad. The talent it takes to create, to captivate others and to share their message with the world is a motivating force I admire.
Mothers
They are selfless, compassionate, stern and immediately destined to shape the lives of those they help bring into this world. There is no greater pressure than knowing that the life of someone else rest in your hands. Not entirely, but partially so. For single mothers, or otherwise, the strength it takes raise a child is part of a powerful journey and everlasting bond women can be proud to claim.
Athletes
Talk about making it in a “man’s world.” While sports are not my forte, the women that make it theirs are exciting. They are disciplined and they are enduring. They strive for excellence everyday. The fighting spirit of female athletes to win over an opponent, to beat their own high scores, to push themselves to their limit then find strength to push themselves a little more is inspiring. It’s a quality I feel I can learn from and strive for in the uphill battles of my life.
So never hesitate to take a moment and celebrate the powerful women in your life. They are the mothers, daughters, sisters and wives who deserve to be celebrated no matter what time of the year it happens to be.
