There IS a God

It would be hard to categorize this as a debate of religion. In the course of this discussion, I am not limiting the definition of God to a specific religious belief. To me, it is unavoidable not to personally believe in a higher power or force that brought everything in existence including ourselves. If I think about how we were created, theories like the organic soup or big bang theory doesn’t exactly answer a lot of the important questions related to the hows and the whys of our creation. Why were we created? What was the purpose of our existence? How is it that everything fell in to place? It seems that there is a design that keeps things in fluid motion. The great scheme of things, or the grand architecture of life, as many people describe it.
For example, the other day I was reading about a recent finding about genes related to aging. A company that had been specializing in anti-aging products was able to tap into research about a specific gene cluster by using the results of the human genome project (HGP) to leverage on what they have been working on. They were able to devise a way to interpret the massive data results of the HGP so that they could apply it to their own research. The HGP basically seeks to determine DNA make-up and map out genes of the human genome from both a physical and functional standpoint. Think of it as a blueprint to human heredity, the greatest implication being that it will provide new avenues for advances in medicine and biotechnology.
Now what is particularly fascinating about the way that this anti-aging company decoded the HGP results was how they likened genes to words. Thus, their chief scientist described these genes as spelling out how we are expressed. Much like how words make up a sentence which make up a paragraph which then express a story…or a thought…or an idea. It seems that genes are written a specific way to regulate a specific body function or physical appearance.
I am no scientist and I am still trying to digest what I have read, but I am in awe. What makes us up is something so complex yet simple and practical in its purpose...to live. Yes, people may argue that this just all part of natural evolution, but how was it made so? Why is it the way it is?
Even well known naturalists and scientists like Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein cannot totally disprove the existence of a deity…”a supreme being”. They were, themselves, agnostic and once religious (see also Famous Scientists who believed in God).
We all have our own beliefs of an existence (or non-existence) of a God and we have experience that serve to strengthen or change these. In the course of my own life the existence or the presence of a God has been undeniable. I am Roman Catholic, but I also believe in some of the principles of Intelligent Design and Creationism. For me, the beauty of the universe and the strange coincidences of nature has a purpose. It's not there, just somehow, by chance. To borrow a quote from Arthur L. Schawlow (Professor of Physics at Stanford University, 1981 Nobel Prize in physics), "It seems to me that when confronted with the marvels of life and the universe, one must ask why and not just how. The only possible answers are. . . . I find a need for God in the universe and in my own life."
