Same Sex Marriage: Why Not?

During the last elections in California, a lot of Propositions were being campaigned including Prop 8. It was the proposition that sought to legalize same-sex marriage in California. I thought that being a progressive state, it woud have passed, but it was not the case. It's kind of funny because among the other Propositions that came out was Prop 2. It passed and it is now known as the Standards for Confining Farm Animals or the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act. Basically, the proposition requires that calves raised for veal, egg-laying hens and pregnant pigs be confined only in ways that allow these animals to lie down, stand up, fully extend their limbs and turn around freely. Now, I have nothing against animal rights, but I think it's ironic that we still have a long way to go with regards to human rights.
At one point in my life, I used to be a fag hag. Meaning I would hang out with a lot of gay people and was sort of a staple in the community. They were mostly gay men and they were fabulous and funny. For a brief moment, I had a direct view of their lives...who they were and what they were about. I tell you they are no different from us. Yes, they have a tendency to, at times, be over the top, but who hasn't been regardless of sexual orientation? We are all human and I think that reason alone should merit everyone having fair and equal treatment.
I bring all this up because I believe that most of the opinions or reactions that people have about this topic is personal and subjective. How can it not be? It challenges a lot of the values, beliefs and traditions that many in society have with regards to religion, marriage, politics and family.
I don't know how it started and why, but we seem to be attached to a definition of marriage that was handed down to us from a time that has come to pass. The world before and the world now, in some ways, are different. However, at it's core it still is the same. In both times, marriage is regarded as a celebration of love and committment. Does it matter in what form it comes? I sense that it is more an issue of fear and doubt. I believe that if the intent is good, then who is to stop same sex couples from getting married? So I say same-sex marriage...why not?
