A Society of Sisters

I love being a woman, and I believe that this has truly worked to my advantage in pursuing my career. This is because I have always had the opportunity of being in an environment that supported diversity. Regardless of gender, there were mentors present throughout the different jobs that I have had.

I realize, though, that I never gave enough notice to the fact that I have constantly connected with women at work. Some of them have become really good friends and have helped me grow, not only professionally, but personally as well. I think that since women are natural nurturers, it is instinctive for us to want to take care of everyone and everything especially our own “kind”. Yes there can be cattiness some or some workplace infighting at times, yet in my experience, most often than not, we have each other’s back. That’s what we call sisterhood and nowadays it is truly in abundance.

This weekend alone has been a wonderful eye opener for me. A girlfriend of mine happened to invite me to an all women weekend retreat at this beautiful villa in Ojai. Since I have been wanting to get away from the city, I immediately signed up for it. Little did I know that it was going to be much more than a retreat…it was to become an affirmation that sisterhood is alive and well.

Picture this: two days of delicious meals, creativity workshops, empowering talks, and yoga with a supportive and positive group! It was a great experience. I’m still on a natural high from positivity and the excitement of endless possibilities. The organizers YSWE or the Young Women Social Entrepreneurs-LA were impressive in making this event happen.

Their mission and core values attest to the fact that you can be successful in any career while still staying true to yourself . It’s all about being a woman for other women. The kinship among girlfriends is one of the most treasured and protected bonds we share. So why not extend it in the workplace?

Think about it. I truly believe that we could all benefit from having our own society of sisters at work. Do you have already have one? I want to hear about it!
