So Soulful

information is beautifulSo, Information is Beautiful posted a blog asking, “What does your soul look like?”

In the blog, they asked people to set aside 5 minutes to draw what they think their soul looks like. Intent of the blog was to see exactly how different people perceived their soul.

I thought this to be a very good question. Truth is, I don’t believe very few of us think about ourselves as a “soul”…I say this because it’s not necessarily visible. What is visible is our face, our body, our hair, our clothes, our possessions – all things that most of us take great time and care into managing on a day to day basis. When we think of ourselves, we think of these things as being representative to us. However, taking care of one’s soul…that’s a different matter in itself.

To me, taking care of one’s soul is managing/improving things in oneself that can’t necessarily be seen by others. For instance, I LACK patience. I’m not a very patient individual. I’m always on the go and expect everyone else to be just as much on the go as me. With that, I can at times be very impatient, rude, or irritable when things don’t go at the speed I think they should be going. If I were to draw out my soul from this context, I’m sure it wouldn’t be very bright or welcoming. This is an area of my life, though, that I consistently try to change – hence, improving this area of my soul.

On the other hand, I believe myself to be a very fun loving individual who enjoys getting to know new people and loves socializing in general. If I were to draw out this part of my life, it would be very colorful, vibrant, and eclectic. This is an area in my life, though, that I am always working to manage and maintain, meaning that sometimes it is very easy to want to stay by myself and ignore others' needs; especially when I feel that I’ve been unfairly mistreated, or just don’t feel like being bothered at times.

In closing, I think that it is very important to remember that we are more than just our possessions or our outward appearances; there is a deeper side to each of us, which is our soul. We should take just as much time on maintaining and improving our soul, as much as we do with everything else in our lives.

Thought-provoking question

What an interesting and thought-provoking question!  I do not think many people take the time to self-reflect or discuss something so intangible and ineffable.  Thanks!

well said Janae

That actually caught my eye when I saw it on the information is beautiful website. I have never thought about how my soul would look like but maybe someday I will be able to draw it if not describe it in words. It's a work in progress =)

Thank you!

Thank you Grace! :-)
Mine is definitely a work in progress too. LOL
I have some black areas that need bits of bright yellow and/or white. :-P
