Almost Un-"BARE"-able

3.5

animalsThis holiday season, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) encourages adoption instead of the purchasing of animals. According to their site,

Puppies sold in pet shops typically come from "puppy mills," where dogs are raised in cruel conditions and forced to live in tiny, filthy metal cages without any socialization or exercise. They lack proper veterinary care and are often abandoned by breeders. Plus, every puppy or kitten who is bought prevents an animal in an animal shelter from finding a home.

Sun-Maid "Made" Over

potpourriA couple of days ago, while watching my favorite chef competition on TV, a commercial for Sun-Maid Raisins came on. The CGI (computer-generated image) animated version of the Sun-Maid girl states that Sun-Maid Raisins are "nothing but grapes and sunshine!" My first reaction to the ad was, "Wow, she looks a lot like Barbie." Turns out, I'm not the only one who has noticed.

punishmentOn November 24th, a 20-year old divorcee was stoned to death in front of large crowd in Wajid, Somalia. The woman was accused of having an affair with her 29-year old boyfriend after giving birth to a still-born. The punishment came via Sharia Law, which, according to Wikipedia, refers to flexible principles in Islamic Law.

The Right to Cross-Dress

cross dressLast month, Morehouse College instated a dress-code policy that prohibits students from “dress-wearing.” The ban is part of what the all-male college in Atlanta, Georgia calls its “Appropriate Attire Policy.” Though the policy also bans wearing hats in buildings, pajamas in public, sunglasses in class, do-rags, saggy pants, and walking barefoot on campus, it is the ban on cross-dressing that has gotten nationwide attention.

The Abortion Business

abortionAlthough I have had a mostly conservative, Roman Catholic upbringing, I have a “pro-choice” stance on abortion which, according to Wikipedia, means I believe that, “a woman should have complete control over her fertility and the choice to continue or terminate a pregnancy.” I feel quite strongly about this, so when I heard about Abby Johnson, the former director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas who quit her job in October and switched from “pro-choice” to “pro-life,” I wanted to learn more about what exactly got her to this decision. Apparently, after witnessing an abortion and receiving pressure from her bosses to increase profits by increasing the number of abortions at her clinic, Johnson became disillusioned with her job and resigned. She claims she experienced a “spiritual conversion” and has joined a “pro-life” prayer group.
