When You Wish Upon A Star...

three wishesI remember being a kid and going on camping trips and looking up into the dark sky, waiting to see a shooting star just so I could make a wish. My wishes were simple then: a new bike, the latest LA Gears, or for my crush to like me back. Now at 25, thinking of what three wishes I would want seems much more complicated. As we get older and we see the world differently than our former child selves, our wishes become much bigger and more socially conscious. If by some lovely stroke of luck I was allowed three wishes, I would categorize them into the following: 1 for me, 1 for my family and 1 for the greater good.

Wish #1 (for myself):

In today’s society, it has almost become the norm to hate your job and do it just to pay the bills. I see so many people stressed out with mean bosses and lives that seem to resemble groundhog's day. Life is too short to waste it in the land of cubicles doing something you hate. So for my personal wish, I would love to be a travel writer. Imagine traveling the world on someone else’s dime and trying out new hotels, vacation activities, and the local food. Sure it's not hard core journalism, but it would be stress free and every day would be different. In this dream, I would assume I would make good money, enough to own an apartment in Brooklyn and be able to put some away for a rainy day. I don’t want for riches and fame, just a happy comfortable existence.

Wish #2 (for my family):

As of late, it seems everyone is losing their jobs, homes, cars, etc. I would wish for my family, especially my mom, to have a cushy nest egg. Enough to go on vacations, retire young, and spend more time with the family and less time at the office. Maybe it’s trite to wish for money, but for anyone who has had to rub two pennies together knows how much it does help when you have a little to spare. The beauty of this wish is it is beneficial to me as well; if we all were a little more lucrative we could fly around and see each other more since we seem to have scattered around the U.S. So I guess its more about time together than money in the end.

Wish #3 (the greater good):

My wish for the world would be peace; no, I’m not running for Miss America, it is just that I would like to see a world without war, hate, and abuse. This is of course is something we all want, but for many reasons we cannot seem to achieve it. Imagine a world without people being killed in wars, where kids can roam the streets and be safe, and everyone is just a little nicer. Maybe it’s far fetched but I don’t want to give up hope that someday, in some way, shape, or form, we all can find our peace.
(Theme song to this wish: Heal the World, Michael Jackson)

Even though I am no longer a kid, I think I’m still going to keep wishing, because you never know…
