Equality For All

Usually with knowledge comes pride. It’s just a cause and effect, an action and reaction. This is not necessarily a bad thing. If it was then we may not have ecologists and doctors and astronauts. I was having a rather heated discussion with someone the other day when it took a turn for the why we were saying, rather than the what. The person proceeded with, “Don’t talk psychology with me Krystal, I’ve taken five college courses on the subject!” to which I replied, “I may have never been to college, but I do have a library card and Google and have spent a great deal of time studying it so you just might not want to go there with me…” It’s funny how we ass-u-me what someone else knows or does not know just by our observation. It’s funny just how wrong we can be.
Because I am a person who is very committed in my faith, it seems that those that don’t share that with me don’t truly understand me. Some people say or act as if they respect what I believe, that we can agree to disagree. I wonder how true this really is. From what I hear and observe, I gather that they think I think I am better than them. While I can’t speak for everyone, for me that is far from the truth and the cry of my heart. If it’s true that with knowledge comes pride, then no matter how pure the individual’s intentions are, this knowledge they have about their faith may very easily come across as pride, as it would in any other subject a person was knowledgeable about.
In this department of knowledge and education, status can be achieved and measured. The pride that comes with knowledge can easily become a person’s source of value and self-worth. It’s been said that education is the religion of some cultures. People are on a continual quest to learn more, grow our minds, earn our way to heaven, or receive enlightenment. The problem I see with these things is that they are not fair. I often hear people speak about equality, yet almost never in this context. I believe that true equality is that we are all in the same boat to begin with. Nobody has an advantage or disadvantage. It is not about what you or I can do, but what He has done. No matter how smart, how educated, how beautiful, how nice, how strong, or how rich we are, we still need something from Him. No matter how dyslexic, how redneck, how homely, how selfish, how weak, or how poor we are, we still are qualified. That is true equality. Matthew 5, 2 Corinthians 8:13, Romans 3:22
