What Do You Treasure?

I have heard that where you spend your time and your money will reveal what it is that you love. This makes a lot of sense. It seems that time and money are the most important things to us. Interestingly, they are both so polar opposite, yet so much the same. Money is one of the most easily replaced things on earth. Time is impossible to get back. Money, however, is usually earned by exchanging our time for it. Money has value in what it can buy. Time has value because we know it is limited.
Think about the bank for example. If you heard today that the largest bank in Europe went bankrupt and people were losing their entire life savings, you would probably think, “Aww, that’s too bad.” You may even take a moment of your time to think about those unfortunate people or you may even say a prayer. What if your bank suddenly lost everything along with all of your life savings? My guess is you would take more than a moment of reflection and probably many prayers, even if you are not a person of faith.
I think of those who lost so much this year in the stock market. They had no doubt invested a lot of time in making the decisions of how to invest their money. They had time and money to lose. What devastating news that must have been for them. The depression and suicide continue to mount in our country’s current economic state. This, all the more, shows the accuracy of the old saying, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Time and money are also usually our first excuses when it comes to getting out of something we don’t really want to do. Haven’t you ever said “I don’t have the time,” or “I don’t have the money”? Haven’t you come up with the time or money when it is something you really wanted to do, even though you didn’t really have any extra? The pastor who married my husband and I always says, “Show me where you spend your time and your money, and I will show you what you love” or “Give me a copy of your bank statement and your day planner and I can tell you in two minutes where your heart is.”
I challenge you with this: Take a long hard look at where you spend your time and your money. What does it show that you love? Where does it show that your heart is? Is it worthy of your worship? Matthew 6:19-24 Psalm 49:12-15
