What Do You Expect?
Submitted by Krystal on Tue, 12/01/2009 - 12:30
Have you ever been disappointed? Let down? Have you ever disappointed someone? I’m sure if you’ve lived life not under a rock then you have been disappointed a time or two. Many of us have what I like to call “non-negotiables”. These are things that we expect to have in the car we drive, the house we’ll buy, the business we want to start, our spouse. It is not unrealistic that we will have expectations in our lives; it is unrealistic when we expect others to meet our expectations. Maybe you’re like me. I like to do this way far too often:
Friends or Family?

Personally, I absolutely love Thanksgiving. Maybe because I’m about 12% Cherokee? I don't love the traffic, plane ticket prices, and I really can't even say I love the food. Turkey is not my favorite, it tends to be a little dry and bland in my opinion (recently, I have discovered that I like dark meat, despite my fears of it). Gravy is usually pretty bland for me also, making it so not worth the calories I see when I look at it. Cranberry sauce. I would never stick a spoon in a jelly jar and eat it, so I don't know why I would start on Thanksgiving. I do love mashed potatoes, but nobody makes them like my (technically ex) step-dad, and it’d be World War III if I spent the holiday with his family instead of any two of my other four parents and their kids (no, I’m not making this up, that’s a whole other blog). And last but not least, pumpkin pie. Is it just me, or does pumpkin pie just smell so much better than it tastes? Maybe it’s a texture thing. Speaking of texture, I almost completely forgot about stuffing, let's just say I'll pass completely on that one.
What's Your Opinion?

Some people like to start sentences with “You should…” or “You need to…” Have you ever known someone who did this? Someone in your family, a friend, maybe even someone you dated. Maybe you do it. I know I’ve done it more than a few times. Do you like being around the person who chronically does that? Do you look forward to spending time with them? Likely not. There’s truth in the old saying “Opinions are like butt holes. Everyone has one and they all stink.”
Are We Wrong Or Right?

In the not-so-distant past, I have become an addict of late night “George Lopez” re-runs. George accuses Angie of having “know-it-all syndrome” and by the end of the episode, coaxes a therapist (guest star Richard Lewis) to give Angie the official diagnosis of “know-it-all-syndrome”. Although incredibly funny, this hit me on a serious level as well. I have this syndrome. I always have. I’ve been called a “know it all” my whole life. In elementary school, it lost me many friends. As an adult, it has sometimes been considered a good quality; people seem to consider me a good person to come to for advice. Good or bad, but usually just annoying, I realize I am 100% guilty of this. I have also recently realized that I’m not alone.
Men Are From Where?

With all of the differences that men and women have, it does seem reasonable that, at one point, men and women were said to be from different planets. Obviously this is an analogy, but there is something to be said about the significant differences of the genders. It has always been common knowledge that opposites attract, but recently we hear more and more about people being “compatible” and “similar” and having “a lot in common”. For instance, online dating. There are “Matches” made from “29 Dimensions” of “compatibility”. These are based on things people have in common.
