March is International Women's Month! Here are some "first women" who have opened doors for us all:
Mary Dixon Kies: First woman to be issued a U.S. patent for inventing a process for weaving straw with silk or thread in 1809. Before this milestone, many women did not bother to apply for patents because they couldn't legally own property independent of their husbands.
Lucy Stone: A huge American abolitionist and suffragist, she was the first woman from Massachusetts to earn a college degree in 1839.
Jeanette Rankin: First female member of Congress, elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1916. To this day, she is also the first and only woman elected to Congress from Montana
