The Consequences of Singularity
Submitted by Julie on Tue, 07/13/2010 - 12:29While researching technological singularity this week, I kept finding myself barely able to comprehend the concept. This is not surprising in light of the fact that Singularity is based on the idea that technology will one day become so advanced that we cannot predict or fathom its future capabilities and how they will change the world. The easiest way I found to interpret Singularity is to look at novels, television shows, and films that have toyed with its implications. The Outer Limits, I, Robot, The Matrix, and Artificial Intelligence all imagine a future where technology has matched or surpassed human ability.

Singularity
Submitted by Renee on Tue, 07/13/2010 - 12:28In looking towards the future of technology, Singularity University as well as the work associated, has been increasingly featured in the media. Singularity: Rose Colored Glasses Looking At A Glass Half Full
Submitted by Rae on Tue, 07/13/2010 - 10:31I wrote an update on my Facebook wall about Singularity last month. A friend of mine commented, asking if I was talking about some cool new thing for single people or about the technology/sci-fi concept. I was speaking about the latter. Last month’s NYTimes article, Merely Human? That’s So Yesterday, covers some of the latest developments in Singularity – a time, possibly just a couple decades from now, when a superior intelligence will dominate and life will take on an altered form that we can’t predict or comprehend in our current, limited state. Umm, what?

Oil Spills: Let's Put Those Big Brains to Work!
Submitted by Renee on Tue, 05/18/2010 - 12:28If there is anything we have learned, it is that oil spills happened. The difficulty is in the unbelievable environmental damages that subsequently occur. Many Americans harbor hatred for oil rigs as well as their employees. All of us are worried about the marine life affected by these spills whether it be in Alaska, or in the Gulf of Mexico this April. Let's take some time to look behind faceless roles and blame-mongering and ask ourselves why these catastrophies are not better prevented?
Oil Is Thicker Than Water
Submitted by Julie on Tue, 05/18/2010 - 12:27When I saw the recent Saturday Night Live skit poking fun at the idea of a “junk shot” being used to plug up the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, I thought it was a far-fetched joke. It turns out that the junk shot is only one of many hastily improvised ideas that has been concocted to try and contain the damage of the continuing oil leak.
