The Sorbate: Abortion
Education Is The Key
Submitted by Christina on Tue, 11/24/2009 - 13:29
Whether you are pro-choice or pro-life, we can all agree that the most ideal situation would be no abortions ever. This isn't entirely possible, but we should be focusing on this issue much more than debating the topic that has seen very little movement lately. Education has been linked to increasing democracy and reducing poverty. With focused attention on reproductive education, the numbers of unwanted pregnancies would be greatly reduced.
What if?

The Catholic Church says that: Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life. I say that because I was raised in the Catholic faith. Having also gone to an all-girls Catholic school until high school, we were always taught that abortion is a sin. I saw girls going through pregnancy even at an early age because the only other option is the consequence of being shunned by their family and their community. Although it was a bit ironic since that was already happening at some level due to being pregnant without getting married.
Abort or Not Abort

To be completely honest, I’m torn on the issue of abortion. But, I must stress that when entering into the discussion of abortion, it is important to remember that there are two sides to the issue – social and legal.

Pro-Choice Is Not Pro-Abortion

I am pro-choice, but that does not mean that I am pro-abortion. I believe abortion is a terribly saddening procedure and my heart goes out to the women who have had to face such a difficult situation.

Abortion: One Size Does Not Fit All
Submitted by Vanessa on Thu, 11/19/2009 - 13:30The problem with abortion is that the details of each situation are so personal and so varied it is impossible to make a single encapsulating statement on the issue, or legislate a single stance. Even within myself, I feel completely conflicted and pulled in about five different directions at the mere mention of the word. As a Christian, I am a humanitarian, value human life above all else, and wish abortion simply was not possible. As a woman, it’s infuriating that the vast majority of legislators who affect my ability to choose are male and 100% of them will never be pregnant. As a girlfriend, I have watched my boyfriend struggle to be part of his daughter’s life while her mother remains uncooperative and have seen firsthand that parenthood affects men just as much as it affects women.
