The Sorbate: Celebrity News: Noteworthy Or Not?

There's a Line

4.75

So...I wish that I could say that I don’t read the tabloids or frequently visit gossip sites/columns…but I won’t, because that would be a lie. Truthfully, I regularly check 3 gossip columns at least two to three times a day. Why?? Honestly, because it’s an escape from my own reality. It’s like I get to be a fly on the wall and peer into someone else’s life for a change. Is this right? Should I be wasting my time determining “Who Wore It Best,” or viewing pictures of celebrities strutting down the streets in their best outfits? No. I think it’s a TOTAL waste of time. But, that’s why I read it. It serves as a means of escape. In those moments, I don’t want to think about what I have going on in my own personal life. I’d rather spend those moments viewing useless facts and information  – and what better source for retrieving such unless information from than celebrities.

Extra! Extra! Entertainment News Is Still News…

entertainment newsI like reading celebrity news columns. So what? I know that I am not the only person that likes this style of journalism. The fact that celebrity sites have gained popularity over the years prove that there is a demand for it. In fact, they are just a digital version of newspaper tabloids which have been in circulation for decades.

Is Your Own Life Too Boring?

4.5

boring lifeWe definitely have a problem in our country with “oversharing”. Why do we care so much?! Who is the biggest loser? Who cheated on whom? Who who who!

I think sometimes this stems from us being so fed up with our lives, that we need an escape. If you go to the same job every day, and cook the same dinner every night, then it's very exciting to read about whom Britney Spears is dating this week, or what J Lo is wearing this year to the Oscars. Upset about something that happened to you? At least you aren’t messed up like Lindsey Lohan, or disgraced like Carrie Prejean. Whether an escape from boredom, or an escape from reality – we crave it, and the more we salivate over it, the more random information we get.

Separation of News and Gossip

4.25

celebrity newsWhy are People Magazine, Us Weekly and Perez Hilton so popular? It’s not because of their gripping in-depth journalism; sadly, I think it is due to our societies need to distract ourselves from our own problems and focus on the drama of celebrities, their children, pets, errands, basically their every move. I know I should get off my soapbox and stop preaching because I am guilty of perusing the gossip sites while bored at work and am tempted to buy the tabloids when I am in line at the grocery store, but there is a little voice inside of me that tells me to resist and don’t pay into this celebrity obsessed culture we have become.

Leave the Gossip to Perez

celebrity newsLike it or not, the lines between tabloids and mainstream media are quickly fading away. People love celebrities. We could sit here and speculate about all of the psychological reasons why people care, but the fact is, there are a lot of people out there who thrive on celebrity news and gossip.

Just take one look at the latest Twitter trending topics to see for yourself; it’s almost a guarantee at least one celebrity name will be featured. At the time of my writing, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Larry King, Jay-Z and Justin Beiber were dominating the ranks.
