The Sorbate: Did You Know?

Good Hair

4.4

did you knowDid you guys know that Chris Rock is coming out with a new movie called “Good Hair”? The movie came about after Chris Rock’s daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asking, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” (Sundance Festival, 2009). As a result, Chris Rock committed himself to discovering who/what had put the idea, that she didn’t have good hair, into his daughter’s mind. What he discovered was that black hair is a big business – a business that doesn’t necessarily always benefit the black culture. He also discovered that his daughter’s question was part of a greater issue – a deep seeded issue, affecting what is considered to be beautiful or unattractive within both the black community and society as a whole.

So, why is this interesting??

Toto the Toilet and Other Tokyo Tidbits

did you knowA couple of years ago when I was still living in Asia, I had the chance to work for a Japanese start-up company that assigned me to Tokyo for almost a year. As a “gaijin” (which means foreigner in Japanese) I was able to observe the rich and sometimes kitschy culture that was unique to Japan. Below are eight juicy tidbits I bet you didn’t know…

Did You Know...

obama healthcare reformDid you know that less than 1/3 of college students get enough sleep? When I saw this article I have to admit, I wasn’t surprised to hear that 68 percent of college students have trouble sleeping because of stress.

Stress is a major part of college and I can definitely attest to those sleepless nights. Whether it’s because of an impending exam or just my mind running on overdrive, I know what it’s like to hopelessly count sheep. The worst part is, the more you try to fall asleep, the more anxious you become and the harder it is to drift off.

Sleep is extremely important for your health and well-being. As I enter my last year of undergraduate education, I feel compelled to point out a few tricks that have helped me beat those sleepless college nights.

Career Myths

did you knowDid you know... ...that it doesn't matter - you can still be happy! Recently a fellow TOG blogger, Jenny, wrote an article called Quarter Life Crisis. Personally, I feel like I go in and out of this crisis. But I took a class (yes, a class!) a year ago that really changed my outlook: Career Planning. To be fair, I wasn't looking to validate myself when I signed up. In fact, I just decided that I should take a class at the community college to meet new people, learn new things, and keep my mind off a breakup. Yoga was full and I didn't feel like taking a business class. I saw a class called Career Planning in the catalog, and I decided, why not!

Guest Sorbate: I Bet You Didn't Know...

bet you didn't knowI started school this week! I had my second “first day” of school and in many ways it felt like the first time around. Leading up to this week, I didn’t think much of it. I work full time and am only registered for 6 units, an online class and a lecture/lab combo on Wednesday nights. But still, the night before my lecture, I found myself nervous about walking into a classroom full of strangers. Having been through college before, I knew what to expect in regards to the teacher, the classroom, etc. What I was worried about was that I was taking a freshman level class and I’m 26 years old!
