The Sorbate: It's The Holidays!
Giving versus Getting
Submitted by Vanessa on Tue, 12/15/2009 - 13:30
The holiday season makes me think about three things, and in this exact order: Christmas music, Christmas trees, and Christmas presents under said trees. I love to hear my favorite songs when I’m walking around town perusing sales, ice-skating in Bryant Park or just taking a look at all the gorgeous decorations in my neighborhood while I sip on some hot chocolate from Starbucks. The smell of a 6-foot Christmas tree greets me every time I open the door to my apartment, and the angel sitting on top reminds me of what Jesus has done for me. Then I think about all the presents under the tree.

My Top Three Favorite Christmas Memories
Submitted by Grace on Tue, 12/15/2009 - 13:28
I have been reminiscing about my memories of Christmas past and I realize how I miss having a proper Christmas celebration. You know, the kind where you have the whole clan on Christmas Eve, dressed up in red or green getting ready for grandma’s big, sumptuous dinner. The house would be decked out with the latest Yuletide décor complete with tiny, golden lights. The kids would be near the tree preoccupied with trying to guess what kind of gifts they are going to receive while the adults are busy catching up on gossip. In the background, you can hear Johnny Mathis or Bing Crosby sing a classic carol.
The Perfect Gift

Each year, I feel like I waste so much time poking around and trying to find the perfect gift for each person on my list. It's not that I mind investing time in loved ones, it's that I hate not finding the perfect gift, and buying them some crap that I don't even know if they will like or use. While I appreciate every gift I ever received, some end up taking up space in my apartment and never get used or worn. I feel too guilty to throw it away, but I don't like that thing enough to use it.
Creative Gift Giving

There are 10 more days ‘til Christmas and that has children and adults quite anxious. The holidays are a time for celebration and reflection. This year we are in the depths of a recession and many people are filled with angst about holiday gift giving. No matter how often we say it, it never gets old, “It’s the thought that counts.” This is more relevant now than ever before. Fewer dollars doesn’t have to mean fewer gifts, but instead more creativity. Some of the best gifts I have ever received were not store bought. A drought can represent a real opportunity to reflect on the meaning of the season and those closest to you. So, that being said…get creative!
