The Sorbate: People of the Year

Michelle Obama

person of the yearIt is often said that behind every great man there is a great woman. Such holds true in the case of President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, the latter of whom I have chosen as my Person of the Year.

Corazon Aquino: L is for Laban (Fight)

person of the yearThat's her...Former President Corazon Aquino the way I remember her back in 1986. In her signature, symbolic yellow outfit, thick glasses, a no non-sense bob cut, and that hand flashing her signature L for Laban...which meant Fight!

During a tumultuous time in Philippine history she inspired a nation to fight back against tyranny. She was a widow, a mother, and a housewife; yet, by some unstoppable force Cory became the defender of democracy. She united Filipinos and led the historic People Power movement.

It Was Nice Bumping Into You

My props for person of the year go to a man who could have potentially saved me (and you) 81 million dollars in 2009: Harold A. Fenner, Jr., M.D.

So who is Harold and how can you get his number? Before we veer off into that topic, consider this: More than 46.3 million Americans cruise around without health insurance everyday according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s latest reports.

Huh? Yes, Ben Huh

person of the yearAnyone who reads this is going to think that I am insane. I probably am. My person of the year is not a Nobel Prize winner, not a hardworking politician or a Goodwill Ambassador. My person of the year is the CEO of the Seattle based Web startup company Pet Holdings, Inc. They own such sites as “I Can Has Cheezburger?” and “FAIL Blog.” And there it is – you think I’m crazy. What’s worse is that I don’t know where to start defending my opinion. Should I give you his bio, explain what the heck “I Can Has Cheezburger?” really is, or should I just tell you to read the Related Links?

Barack Obama, The Man

4

person of the yearThis year’s person of the year has to undoubtedly be Barack Obama, the man. Time awarded the president-elect the honor last year after a historic election, but this year is even more important. I believe that it is he, as a man, who deserves the honor. He is a year into the presidency and has faced more struggle and conflict than one can imagine. He inherited an office and a nation filled with problems. While I realize that any president is going to face challenges and must deal with problems, these of today seem almost insurmountable.
