One of the worse things you can find out on a Saturday morning is that your family, who is a thousand miles away is in the middle of a deadly typhoon called Ondoy (known internationally as Ketsana). If it weren’t for Facebook, I would have been left unaware of what was transpiring. The international news channels were slow to pick-up on this breaking story, so I could only turn to social media on the web for important information. What I saw in my network were images, links, and status updates about the floods that were caused by the storm. It was enough for me to reach out for the phone and frantically dial back home.
Promising Steps Toward AIDS Vaccine

AIDS was first detected in the early 80’s and since then, 25 million people have died from it; that is the equivalent of the population of Texas. Yesterday, news broke that there has been a medical breakthrough in the AIDS/HIV epidemic. News that gives hope that one day there may be a vaccine to stop this disease. After over 20 years of trials, a new vaccine in Thailand has been produced and has been proven to reduce the risk of HIV infection by 31%. Two old trial vaccines were combined to make this new vaccine. Usually, for a vaccine to be considered a success (like the chicken pox vaccine) it has to be 75% effective. So of course there is much more research needed due to the complexities of this disease, but this is a huge leap in the right direction to finding a cure.

Upon the death of Ted Kennedy in August, speculation about who would fill his US Senate seat quickly erupted. While a number of names have begun to take over the spotlight, one Republican State Senator is standing out because of a decision he made nearly 30 years ago.
A “starving” 22-year-old student at Boston College, Scott Brown was named “America’s Sexiest Man” and posed nude for Cosmopolitan back in 1982. Seemingly, Brown (father of American Idol Ayla Brown) hasn’t tried to cover up his past, stating that the photos surface around every election.

Doing Away With The To-Do List

I dont know about you guys, but I feel like my life is a huge checklist right now.
Work, school, hobbies, church, friends, boyfriend, personal time, exercise, rest, etc...
It's just so much sometimes! If you think anything like me, checklists irritate me...I feel like EVERYTHING needs to get checked off in order for the day to have been successful. What's twisted about this, though, is that I know I shouldn't set such high demands for myself, because 1) it's not healthy to live this way, and 2) it's not practical.

I wasn't sure if I would like Community, the new show on NBC. Sure, they used Matt & Kim in their commercials - that was a huge plus. But I am a huge fan of community college, and I was worried it would be a little offensive. They had a comedy a few years ago called Teachers, and it portrayed teachers, sitting around talking crap about their students and being lazy - not very funny when I am trying to get respect with my students.
