The Sorbate: Same Sex Marriage
Like Interracial Bans, Same-Sex Marriage Bans Are Unconstitutional
Submitted by Angela on Tue, 10/20/2009 - 12:30
Forty-two short years ago, the United States Supreme Court ruled that laws banning marriage between people on the basis of race were unconstitutional in the landmark case Loving vs. Virginia. During the time leading up to this decision, many considered interracial marriages to be “unnatural” and “immoral.” Sound familiar?
Marriage & Civil Unions

So…there are two different perspectives/definitions of marriage.
In a religious, or spiritual context, marriage in the Bible reads that marriage is God’s idea and is a living symbol of the relationship between Christ and the Church. For instance, Genesis 2:18-24 reads, “It is not good for the man to be alone...this explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.” Ephesians 5:31-32 reads, “As the Scriptures say, ‘A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the Church are one.(NLV Translation, 2004).

"There's no such thing as a fraction of equality." - Cleve Jones
It's simple math. Either things are equivalent, or they aren't. Civil Unions are not even a little equal to the right to get married.
People should absolutely have the right to get married. Gay or straight. I firmly believe this.

Same Sex Marriage: Why Not?
Submitted by Grace on Tue, 10/20/2009 - 12:27
During the last elections in California, a lot of Propositions were being campaigned including Prop 8. It was the proposition that sought to legalize same-sex marriage in California. I thought that being a progressive state, it woud have passed, but it was not the case. It's kind of funny because among the other Propositions that came out was Prop 2. It passed and it is now known as the Standards for Confining Farm Animals or the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act. Basically, the proposition requires that calves raised for veal, egg-laying hens and pregnant pigs be confined only in ways that allow these animals to lie down, stand up, fully extend their limbs and turn around freely. Now, I have nothing against animal rights, but I think it's ironic that we still have a long way to go with regards to human rights.

Guest Sorbate: The Definition Of Civil Marriage
Submitted by Rae on Tue, 10/20/2009 - 11:39
After graduating from high school in 2000, a male friend of mine gave me a call and told me he was gay. I sat there on the other end of that phone call and I felt honored that he trusted me enough to “come out” to me. Later that summer, as we were hanging out, as two care free teenagers having fun before the seriousness of the “real world” was to hit, I brought up the issue of marriage. I talked giddily about where I’d love my dream wedding to be, what the colors and theme would be, etc. However, I noticed my friend didn’t share in my enthusiasm. When asked why, he responded, “I’m gay. There isn’t a way for me to get married. I won’t be able to have children.” It then dawned on me, we didn’t have the same options for marriage; That we were not equal.
