Health Before Profit

Things like rugby vs. football, World Cup vs. World Series, cold beer vs. warm beer and U.S. Health Insurance vs. Europe’s Universal Healthcare. When I told a friend about Kaiser Permanente and how I could only use it in a few states, the monthly costs was quite high, there was $40 co-payment and prescription costs were rising, he looked perplexed. So I asked what he was thinking. He responded with, “You PAY for healthcare?!” He pulled out his universal healthcare card and explained how he could be in any country in Europe, at anytime, and go to any hospital and get help. Most times when he’s home in Manchester, the doctor made house calls. “LIES,” I shouted to him!!! Alas, he wasn’t lying. I wish I lived in Europe…

What’s The Story Behind “Public Option?”

obama healthcare reform In response to the question, “Should President Obama continue to push for a health care overhaul?", I can honestly say that this is a tough one being that I am not an expert in this field. I do believe, however, that it would be very premature to judge Obama’s plan with any critical eye, due to the fact that the bill has yet to be created. At this point, all that we do know about the plan is he-says, she-says. Looking at what’s being reported, here is what I’ve gathered about the plan.

Putting the Care Back in Healthcare

obama healthcare reformOne of the first things I noticed when I started working in the U.S. was how expensive health insurance was. Back in the Philippines, I was enjoying premium benefits by just being my father's dependent on his company insurance. I get to have an executive physical exam with no out-of-pocket which would cost me more than a $300 on my current U.S. insurance. I actually have my annual physical exam in the Philippines when I visit and try to include all my dental work as well. This is because it is a fact that the health care system in the Philippines is affordable, and the doctors and nurses are well-trained.

Because we are looking at a major overhaul to something that is very important to the people of this country, this is a big deal and of course everyone is working hard to get it done right. This overhaul needs to happen, there is no question about it, but as always, the devil is in the details.

Healthcare Reform: Put Down Your Pitchforks

obama healthcare reformNot too long ago I was driving home from work, enjoying a perfectly beautiful summer day, when I pulled up to a red light. I glanced to the right and noticed a man approaching my open window with a pamphlet.

“Would you like to help stop Obama from destroying America?” he said to me.

Respectfully, I told him I supported our president and was not interested.

“Do you support Hitler and the Nazis?” he asked, this time in a more forceful and aggressive tone.

“Uhh…of course not,” I responded as I impatiently waited for the light to turn green. I was starting to feel uncomfortable.

“Then take a stand against Obama’s call for healthcare reform!!!” the man yelled.

I politely told him I’d had enough as I proceeded to roll up my window, but just before I could, the man took one step back and boldly screamed “Heil Hitler!” as he motioned his hand upward from his chest.
