For 2010 Geolocation is the new buzzword for the online community.  Last year, services such as Loopt and Google Latitude became popular applications that allowed people to share their real-time location with friends through any Internet-connected device. Experts think that this will continue to catch on for 2010. More businesses will offer location-based services that will allow you to identify exactly where objects and other people are. Even photos and videos  can now be “geotagged”. Mashable.com has an excellent article that will give you a detailed account of what it would look like here.

2010 predictions2010 Predictions:

1. Facebook will continue to grow.

There are those who seem to be of the opinion that Facebook has reached its final plateau. Because of its similarities to MySpace, the success of which turned out to be a bell curve, many in the media world have forecasted that Facebook is about to start falling off in terms of members/traffic. I disagree. While the technical functions of Facebook are the same as on MySpace (connecting to others, leaving comments and messages, sharing photos), Facebook lets you do the same things in a very different way – less gunk, junk, and clutter. Facebook established and maintained an operation that looks and feels ageless. It’s not something you grow into or out of. Plus, their targeted advertising and monetization of successful applications to me means that this will be the best year yet for Facebook. I think they are closer than ever to becoming profitable.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of Social Networking

4.8

Social media/networking sites, like everything else, is good in moderation. I frequent Facebook to see what my friends are up to this weekend, or post a status update about a concert I’m going to or some other fun activities planned. It is great getting reconnected and staying in touch with old friends from high school, elementary school, or people I met while backpacking. It is so much easier than calling someone overseas or even across town; it’s at your fingertips when it’s convenient for you. It is sometimes easier to shoot a message on a networking site to keep in touch while on the go rather than playing phone tag. A definite pro to me is that it is quick information at the time you need it.

Social Networking: Friend or Foe

social mediaDo you guys remember when you were first introduced to the Internet??

I remember that day vividly.

I was in the 5th or 6th grade, and my teacher gave us an assignment where we had to look up a topic on the rainforest and write a brief 1-page paper. The catch, however, was that we could not refer to the library or an encyclopedia as we were previously conditioned to do so. Instead we had to use an Internet search tool to find articles about the topic. I remember being in shock that day and completely amazed at the idea that I could use a computer to find information about ANYTHING that I could possibly want to know. I saw the computer as a tool for information, but NEVER did I think that in the short span of those 13 years that the Internet, or computer technology as a whole, would allow me to do the things that I’m capable of doing now.

Don't Get Lost in the Social Media Cloud

social mediaLet's face it. We have not only embraced social media, we breathe it in. Celebrities, corporations and even governments utilize this as a powerful tool and platform for communication, collaboration, and interaction. Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Hulu, Blogger, Wordpress, Myspace, and Plurk, are only some of the more popular brands of social media out there. Mind you Social Networking is just one component of this social computing cloud that has emerged from the web. So what is social computing you ask?

Don't Hide Behind Your Computer Screen

social mediaAs a student in the communications industry, I’ve been dabbling in social media for a few years now. It seems to be all the rage. At every conference and workshop I go to, there’s always at least one mention of social media.

Although I fall into the category of “digital native,” I have to admit I wasn’t the first to jump aboard the social media express. I couldn’t even begin to comprehend why anyone would care about my answer to the question, “What are you doing?” and the first time I logged on to LinkedIn I was quite intimidated.

How Can Social Networking Be Beneficial?

social media benefitsI was talking to someone today who explained to me why she deleted her Facebook profile. "It's too distracting, with not enough benefit," she said. While I understood what she meant, I have to disagree. The social media tools I have in my arsenal have, without a doubt, brought me to where I am today.
