The Sorbate: Thoughts On Incestuous Relationships And Other Issues

Incest Is A Crime Not A Taboo

mackenzie philipsI was as shocked as anybody to see Mackenzie Phillips tell Oprah about her incestuous affair with her father. What is more disturbing is that this affair went on for 10 years. This is certainly an act of crime that went unpunished. I feel so disappointed because a lot of people chose to focus on how it was a "consensual" affair. In the U.S., incest is a crime regardless of the age or consent of those involved. But who would ever consent to sex with their father if they were in the right state of mind??? Remember, it all began with a drug-fueled rape.

Family Tragedy May Help Others

mackenzie philipsTo be completely honest, I heard rumblings in the news about Mackenzie Phillips and her scandal, but I always changed the station or ignored it because I had no idea who she was or her father. But this week’s sorbate topic asked our views on the subject, so I figured, well I better read up so I can make an informed judgment on this family.

At first, all you are bombarded with are the headlines that read: INCEST. This is disturbing in itself, but after more in depth reading and video watching, I realized she is stating that she had a decade long sexual affair with her father, who was a singer in group The Mama’s and Papa’s. She said it happened for the first time in a drugged stupor.

No Such Thing as Consensual Incest

mackenzie philipsAccording to Dictionary.com, consent is defined as “permission, approval or agreement.” I strongly believe that no one in their proper state of mind would truly consent to such horrific behavior exemplified in the relationship between Mackenzie Phillips and her father.

If (and that is a big if) someone truly desired to have incestuous relations, I believe such behavior could only spawn from emotional or psychological circumstances or situations beyond the person’s control that prevent them from making a rational decision.

Does it matter if it happened or not?

mackenzie philipsWhen Mackenzie Phillips revealed that she had an incestuous relationship with her father, her stepmother said that she thought she was lying. It seems that there were some intense relations between those two, but I can't believe that she said that. Either Mackenzie was telling the truth, after many years of keeping that horrible secret, and her stepmother denying it was a cruel way to try and avoid embarrassment, or Mackenzie was indeed lying and still needs some serious mental help. I believe that either way, Michelle Phillips shouldn't have told the public she thought Mackenzie was lying.

Yet Another Reason To Say NO To Drugs

mackenzie philipsI have to be completely honest…this topic is very disturbing and disquieting. It’s actually very difficult for me to write about this, being that I cannot fathom how one could have sex with a family member – greater yet, one’s own father!

In Mackenzie Phillip’s case, facts are limited. However, what we do know is that drugs were involved, which ultimately led to her forming a consensual, incestuous relationship with her father. All one can do at this point is re-state how drugs negatively affect oneself and everyone else around. Drugs do not allow one to think clearly. To be plain, using drugs is DANGEROUS, DETRIMENTAL to one’s health, and INHIBITING, …therefore, don’t do them!
