The Sorbate: Thoughts On Equality and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Changes

martin luther king jrWhen I think about Martin Luther King, Jr., one thing comes to mind. Change. He became instrumental to the world’s civil rights movement because he took action to alter the status quo. He encouraged his followers to take action to be granted certain rights such as the right to march and the right to congregate to talk about being allowed to vote.  King's message here was very clear: you must act now to bring change. Every time you act now, you have won whether the outcome is good or bad.
It is then a good coincidence that the day to commemorate one the most famous figures in history falls in the beginning of the year. The New Year, for most of us, heralds a lot of changes or at least the desire for it. We have resolutions for diet plans, getting a new job, kicking a bad habit or breaking up a toxic relationship, but how many have we honestly kept throughout the year?

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led by example...will you?

martin luther king jrI’ve been outspoken for just about my entire life. I feel very strongly about speaking up when I disagree and I am not shy about expressing my opinion, especially when it comes to the well-being of others. I recently had the opportunity and the determination to speak and advocate on someone else’s behalf. I am a member of a gym and exercise about 5 times per week. My gym offers a variety of classes and they really work for me. I am a subscriber to the theory that it’s easier and more fun to exercise with direction and other people. I have been knee deep in my routine for about two years now and working with the same trainer/group exercise leader. She is the sole reason for my club membership, so when she told me that the club had dropped her health insurance, I was outraged.

MLK: A Dream Misinterpreted

4.8

martin luther king jrI’ve been going through a lot lately because many things in my life are changing. I start my first full-time, post-grad school position tomorrow morning, in a few months I will be moving into a new apartment, and I’m four months into a relationship. I’ve been thinking a lot about change, how we deal with it, and sometimes, how we resist it. With the economic downturn came major change in all aspects of our society. I’ve realized through my struggles, my loved ones’ struggles and the struggles of the global community that real change requires healing. Martin Luther King’s dream was not so much about achieving equality for blacks as it was about healing taking place in society at large.

Living the Dream

martin luther king jrForty-seven short years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., stood before more than 200,000 civil rights activists and delivered what has come to be known as “one of the greatest and most notable speeches in human history” (Wikipedia).

I can only wonder what it would have been like to be a part of the audience that day; to look up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and see Dr. King, to feel the power radiating from his words and to be inspired by the passion and cadence in his voice.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Never met the man. Never shook his hand.

Or had coffee with him.

Though I would have liked to.
