The Sorbate: The Truth About Donating
Giving is so good
Submitted by Grace on Tue, 01/26/2010 - 13:30This week's topic is something that is really close to my heart. Last September, I posted a blog regarding The Bayanihan Spirit, which referred to the spirit of communal unity or the communal effort to achieve a particular objective. Although I was not able to reach the total donation goal, I am very proud to say that a lot of people still generously responded to this plea for help. I also believe that this was a great opportunity to make people aware of events and stories that affect other people in this world. Most often we get so wrapped up in our world that it is hard to see past it. We do not realize how other people are suffering and how we can help change that in our own simple way.

How to Help the Homeless (For Real)
Submitted by Vanessa on Tue, 01/26/2010 - 13:29You’ve all seen or heard about New Yorkers. The sterotypes precede us as we travel. When I’m in the States people say, “You don’t sound like a New Yorker.” If I’m out of the country, people look at me as if they think I am rich and glamorous, even if I’m just wearing a T-shirt and flip-flops. Much of the world forms their opinion on New Yorkers (if they have one at all) on what they see in movies. Well, I am a genuine New Yorker, born and raised in the Bronx. Besides four years of college in Michigan, and a year and a half living in South Korea (that’s for another blog) I have lived here in New York City my whole life. We are every bit as cynical and suspicious as we’re made out to be, especially when people claim they are doing something out of the kindness of their hearts. Like the United Homeless Organization.

On January 12, 2010 a 7.6 magnitude earthquake shook the island nation of Haiti to its core. The earthquake hit and left the nation in ruins. The capital, Port Au Prince, was demolished and the toll on its people is insurmountable. This is the latest in a series of natural disasters requiring the aid and support from millions of people and organizations around the world. When disaster strikes, you can almost predict the series of events that will take place; broadcast networks on the ground, U.S. government officials respond, celebrities chime in, and charities and relief organizations alike ask for our support.

"Have you gotten a tattoo in the past year?"
"No."
"Have you been tested for syphilis or gonorrhea?"
"No."
"Have you been in juvenile detention, lockup, jail or prison for more than 72 hours?"
"No," I replied again.
